Sgt Erik Munch Nielsen was one of two brothers and Danish nationals who enlisted in the USAAF during the Second World War.
Erik Munch Nielsen was born in Copenhagen on 1 January 1920, to labourer Frederik Julius Nielsen and Dortea Petra Marie Nielsen (née Munch).[1]
Nielsen emigrated to the United States in 1924, arriving with hos mother ans siblings to New York from Copenhagen onboard SS United States on 25 November 1924. His father had emigrated earlier in the year.[2] The family settled in Warren, Pennsylvania.[3]
He married Constance Elaine Wade on 30 May 1942.[4]
Nielsen enlisted as a private (33295803) in the US Army in Erie, Pennsylvania, on 29 August 1942.[5] Nielsen was on active duty from 12 September 1942.[6] Nielsen was naturalised as a US citizen in Columbia, South Carolina, on 6 October 1944. At the time, he served at the Florence Air Base holding the rank of sergeant.[7] He served overseas from 6 March 1945 to 2 March 1946 and was released from service on 9 November 1946.[8]
Nielsen died in Warren, Pennsylvania, on 31 December 1985. [9] He was the brother of Axel Munch Nielsen, who served in the USAAF.
