Eight Spitfire IX LF LR of No. 1 Squadron with 4 of 165 were laid on for Instep 52 to patrol lines A, B & C. One a/c failed to start. Remaining seven took off but shortly after Blue 1 with engine cutting and Blue 2 returned. Yellow 1 had R/T trouble and Yellow 2 returned with him. Yellow 3 [Jacobsen] returned with oil on windscreen. Only two a/c of No. 1 Squadron patrolled area; this was carried out at zero feet and was quite uneventful. Weather local rainstorms - strong north wind - thick cumulus cloud - clear patches 6/10th 1000 ft.
