Details
Squadron orbitted Tunis Bay at 23,000 feet in search of JU.52's. These were seen and the Squadron dived to attack. At the same time, ME.109's were overhead and these persistently "nibbled" at the Squadron during its attack on the JU.52's and afterwards, on the way home. The following are the results of the engagement:- F/Lt. Lynes opened fire on a JU.52 and set it partially alight. He was about to go in to attack it for the second time and finish it off, when a Spitfire dived and did the job for him. The pilot of this Spitfire is believed to have been P/O. Sorensen who was immediately afterwards jumped by an ME.109 and shot down himself. Sgt. Kellar after shooting down a JU.52 in flames was also attacked by an ME.109 and his aircraft was seen to enter the water. F/Lt. Lynes, after sharing a JU.52 with P/O. Sorensen, then turned and attacked another which be destroyed. F/O. Starnes also destroyed a JU.52. On the way home the Squadron was chased by ME.109's and P/O. Plummer contrived [...] on to the tail of one of these aircraft giving it a 4 second burst resulting in its destruction.
