Plt Off. Colin Frank Sorensen

(1922 - 2010)

Danish born Colin Frank Sørensen enlists in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and is taken POW in North Africa in May 1943. He is imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3, but is safely back in United Kingdom in May 1945.

Colin Frank Sørensen is born in Denmark on 15 June 1922.

He enlists in the Royal Canadian Air Force on 27 February 1941. He is posted to No. 3 Initial Training School on 9 March 1941. On 14 March 1941 he is posted to No. 1 Manning Depot to he is further posted to No. 4 Manning Depot only two weeks later. Finishing initial training he is posted to No. 2 Elementary Flying School on 14 July 1941. He graduated and is promoted to Sergeant on 5 December 1941. The following day he is posted to No. 11 Supplementary Flying School on 12 September 1941.

Having ended training in Canada he is posted to “Y” Depot, Halifax, to await embarkation to Europe. On 8 January 1942 he is posted to the Royal Air Force overseas. On 11 September 1942 he is commissioned Pilot Officer.

He is posted to No. 232 Squadron in North Africa at some point.

On 28 May 1943 he is reported missing and prisoner of war. He is imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3 (No. 1088). He is back – safe – in United Kingdom on 9 May 1945 and is repatriated to Canada on 6 July 1945. He retires from Royal Canadian Air Force on 22 October 1945.
