Carl (Karl) Nielsen was born on 13 July 1912 in Hundslev in the parish of Rønninge, the son of miller Peter Thorvald Nielsen and Hansine Marie Nielsen (née Pedersen).[1] He was the eldest of three siblings. Nielsen’s grandfather had built the mill in 1874, and his father’ followed him as the proprietor of the Hundslev Mill.[2]

A few months after his confirmation, the family emigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, onboard the SS Oscar II on 18 April 1927.[3] The family seems to have settled in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan.[4]

Nielsen enlisted in the Royal Norwegian Air Force on 12 February 1941.[5] He received his initial training at the Recruit School from 12 February to 1 March 1941. He was posted to the Police Department on 4 March 1941.[6]

Nielsen followed an NCO course from 26 May to 17 June 1941[7] and he was recommended for promotion as corporal.[8] He was promoted on 1 August 1941 and became one of four corporals in the Police Department in Toronto.[9]

In October 1942 he was sent overseas arriving in the United Kingdom on 7 October 1942.[10] He was released from the Norwegian Air Force in order to join the Norwegian Navy on 18 February 1943.

Nielsen lived in Norway after the war, but returned to Canada with his wife and two sons in February 1957.[11]
