Danish WW2 Pilots

Erik Nielsen

Erik Nielsen is born in Denmark but immigrates to Australia before the war. He serves in the Volunteer Defence Corps as well as the Royal Australian Air Force before the war.

Erik Nielsen (later Eric) is born on 2 March 1924 in Gundsømagle, Denmark. He is the son of Niels Peder Martin Nielsen and Sigrid Bohne Nielsen (née Svendsen) [1]

The Australian Army

He enlists at the City Recruiting Depot in Brisbane for the Volunteer Defence Corps (Queensland) for part time duty on 5 June 1942 (Q.201557). He is then living in Bulimba and a naturalized British subject. In the Mobilization Attestation Form it is recorded that he is apprentice aircraft engineer.

On 31 January 1944 he is transferred to the 651 Australian Light Anti Aircraft Battery of the V.D.C. He is discharged on 9 November 1944 at which point he holds the rank of private. [2]

The Royal Australian Air Force

On 19 October 1944 he enlists for the Royal Australian Air Force. After the war he continues in RAAF and is discharged on 11 February 1966 at which point he is attached to 2 Airfield Construction Squadron, Detachment "A", holding the rank of Sergeant. [3]
