Spitfire IX L.F. (AH-F)
12 Spitfire IX L.F. of this squadron, led by Major Christie, left the base on Ramrod 817 at 0620 hours for Manstron as forward base. They took off again from Manston at 0944 hours to act as close Escort to 18 Bostons. Rendez-vous was established at 0955 hours and the Belgian coast was crossed at Furness at 10,000 ft. The marshalling yards at Hirsen were bombed, obviously with a rather poor result. No enemy aircraft were seen, but around the target area a moderate, inaccurate, light flak was experienced. The weather and visibility were good although a slight haze rose up to 9,000 ft. The squadrons returned over the same route as used on the in-trip and landed safely at Manston at 1130 hours, from where they flew back to this base arriving here at 1345 hours.
