Details

Circus 242. The Squadron proceeded to Ford during the morning to take part in Circus 242 as 2nd fighter withdrawal cover with 331(N) Squadron. This Squadron, led by W/Cdr P.G.Jameson D.F.C. took off from Ford at 1235 hours and set course for Beachy Head. From Beachy Head, the Wing climbed behind and above Biggin Hill and Kenley Wings as far as the French Coast. The Wing penetrated 10 miles inland towards Beauvais and the bombers were sighted crossing the coast about St.Valery. The Wing, at this time, was ahead and to port of the bombers. Enemy aircraft were seen to approach from starboard and five attacked the bombers head on. The Wing turned towards them and [] the e/a to turn away. Five other e/a were seen to be attacking from astern, but by turning into them, the Wing prevented them from pressing home the attack. Some more enemy aircraft were seen above but these did not attempt to attack.
