Ramrod 1511. 12 Spitfire IX LF with 90 gallon tanks took off at 09.30 hours landing at Ursel 10.00 exept one which returned Manston 09.45 with technical trouble. At 13.15 the 11 remaining Spitfires took off to act as escort to 100 Halifaxes. Bombers were not seen at R/V so squadron escorted a similar number of Lancasters to Bocholt. 1 Spitfire returned early with technical trouble. Bombing appeared concentrated and there was much blackish smoke from target area. A few bursts of heavy flak inaccurate, from target area and on way out. Weather clear above haze up to 6000 ft. Visibility 25 miles. Squadron landed Manston 15.35 hours.
