Ramrod 1469. 12 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) took off to act as escort on penetration and withdrawal to 80 Lancasters bombing Gelsenkirchen Thormal power station. Rendezvous 25 miles E.S.E. of Antwerp at 15.23 hrs. and to target at 15.59 hrs. Bombing appeared well concentrated. Slight heavy flak accurate for height over the target appered to be directed at the leading bombers. One Lancaster seen to spin down on the target following an internal explosion, three parachutes seen. Cloud 10/10ths stratus north of target, otherwise no cloud but much haze. Squadron returned to Ursel where they spent the night.
