Ramrod 1423. 12 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) led by W/Cdr. Oxspring too off (Yellow 2 & Blue 1 unable to take off) to act as target and withdrawal cover to 150 Lancasters bombing the VOHWINKEL Marshalling Yards near Solingen. Yellow 4 returned early with engine trouble, also Yellow 3, cut out on overload tank. Remainder were over the target 14.27 hrs. Bombers were a little late. Bombing unobserved owing to cloud 7/10ths cumulus 3,000 - 8,000 ft. visibility above good. Heavy intense flak accurate for the bombers from the target area. Squadron returned safely to base. Brussels Relay aircraft continued patrol until the remainder of the Wing were clear of the area.
