Ramrod 1391. The duty was to provide target and withdrawal cover for 156 Lancasters bombing a sulphurie scid works at Oberhausen in the Ruhr. 12 Spitfire IX LF with 90 gallon tanks took off though one was abortive and returned to base at 13.55 hrs. with engine trouble. The operation went as planned. No bombing results were seen owing to 10/10ths cloud at 6,000 ft. over the target. The Squadron patrolled at 20,000 ft. losing height to about 600 ft. over the Belgian coast. Intense heavy flak was encountered over the target and fairly accurate for the bombers. An explosion in the air believed to be a scarecrow was seen.
