12 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) acted as escort to 36 Mitchells. Rendezvous as planned. Melee of aircraft seen over DOETINCHEN [Doetingchem, 10 km east of Arnhem]. When the Squadron was over Arnhem at 12,000 ft., 3 unidentified aircraft was seen spiralling down. Bombing results unobserved. Smoke seen from target. Moderate to intense heavy accurate flak from the target area. Few bursts of heavy flak on the way in. Moderate accurate Bofors from the Belgian border north of Eecloo on the way out. Weather target area 10/10ths cirrus at 13,000 ft., visibility good. Channel 3/10ths to 4/10ths at 3,000 - 5,000 ft., 10/10ths stratus at 9,000 ft. Visibility good.
