Details

10 Spitfire IX L.F. carried out an Armed Recco in the Calais - Ghent - Auloye area. The Dutch coast was crossed at Blankenburgh. The Squadron crossed the Bruges-Ghent Canal on which a stationary tug with two barges attached was seen about 8 miles West of Ghent. Blue 3 accompanied by his No. 2 attacked observing strikes on the target. When about 6 miles S.W. of Ghent a large lorry was seen travelling westwards, on a road believed to be running from Ghent to Courtrai. The lorry was attacked by Yellow 3, strikes were observed and it was stopped. When about 7 miles SSE of Ghent 2 Army lorries, one of which had a large gun in tow, were seen parked at a cross-road. Yellow 3 accompanied by his No. 2 [F/L Pedersen] attacked, observing strikes on the one lorry and the gun it was towing. On his second attack he left the other lorry burning furiously. The Squadron swept on to Renaix, about 10 miles N.W. of Lille, W. of Ypres, crossing out at Nieuport. The Squadron was led by Wing Commander Powell.
