Escort to Marauders & Lightnings of U.S.A.A.F. bombing Garbini. 1420-1620 Arrived at rendevous point at 1441 hrs. at 10,000. No signs of bombers. Proceeded to Catania at 14,000. Engaged 8 plus E/A and in dogfight Sgt. Saphir became separated climbed to 22,000 ft. sighted 2 ME.109s 5,000 ft. below engaged and destroyed both. Spit IXs on way out contacted bombers and escorted them home. Spit Vs. [Ipsen] patrolled Biscari at 5,000 ft. and saw 3 plus E/A at own height in distance. No engagement. P/O McConnell crashed on landing, uninjured A/C Cat. 1.
