Details

Task ESSEN. Good visibility with thin cloud. Bombed at 2116 hrs from 19,500 ft, and flash of 4,000 lb bomb was seen among the fires in built up area. Yellow and green T.I. were borugt back as preliminary T.I. were not seen. One big oil tank was seen to explode at about 2113 hrs in a mass of reddish fire and plenty of smoke. Fires were concentrated and could be seen from the DUTCH coast on return. Intense heavy flak cooperating with S/L's approx. 260. One photo attempted. Bomb load 1 x T.I. yellow, 2 x T.I. green, 1 x 4,000 HC, 9 x 8 x 30 incens.
