Details

At 1415 hours the Squadron took off from Manston, and set course for a convoy on the way from Dieppe. 331 Sqdn were on too, with 332 Sqdn at 4-5000 feet and 242 Sqdn below. Enemy aircraft were reported ahead of the squadron and later F.W. 190's were sighted straight ahead. The squadron continued to patrol, and 20 enemy aircraft came in and attacked the escorting squadron. Most of the e/a were F.W. 190's, but Me. 109's were seen. The attacks developed into dog fights, with 331 Sqdn being the hardest engaged (see attached reports for combats). Sgt. Djønne, while attacking an F.W. 190, was himself attacked from astern and had to bale out owing to his engine being hit very badly. He was picked up by a Motor Launch and returned later to the squadron.
