Ramrod 1546. 12 Spitfire IX LF with 90 gallon tanks took off from B.86 [Helmond, Netherlands] to act as escort on penetration and withdrawal to 17 Lancasters bombing Heligoland. Fighters were sighted slightly ahead. Figthers escorted these to target which was bombed at 17.05 hours. It was then realised these bombers were first box late. Contact then made with deputy bomber leader who requested escort. Fighters reported they were in the target area. Second box of bombers then appeared in the target area and bombed about 17.30. Fighters escorted bombers on return journey at about 17.30. Fighters escorted bombers on return journey until 17.40 hours bomber formation very spread out. Bombing appeared good. 2 a/c returned 1 with mechanical trouble, 1 escort [F/L Pedersen]. Escort aircraft turned over on landing at B.86.
