Ramrod 1471. 10 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) took off from Ursel to act as escort to front half on penetration and withdrawal to 290 Halifaxes bombing KAMEN, near Dortmund. Bombers were late at the rendezvous and at the target. No bombing was seen owing to 10/10ths cloud, tops 8,000 ft. over the target area. Intense heavy flak, accurate for the front of the bomber stream was sent up from the target area. One Halifax hit by flak and broke up in the target area. One Spitfire landed at Ursel short of fuel, and the remaining nine returned to Manston.
