Ramrod 1319. 10 Spitfire IX LF (90 gallon tanks) acted as front escort to Lancasters attacking Emmerich. Rendezvous just south of Boskoop 13.55 hrs. Cover given at 13,000 ft. Bombing results very good. Two very large columns of black smoke seen, one north of river and one south, and several smaller columns. Large oil fire south of river from previous bombing. Huge explosion seen 7-8 miles west of Emmerich, smoke up to 12,000 ft. One fighter seen shot down by flak S.W. of target. Heavy flak on the way in from Hague to target. Intense heavy flak from Elst to target. Moderate flak Flushing on the way out. Cloud 10/10ths at 13,500 ft., visibility very good, 500 ft. thick strats cumulus over target and northwards. No cloud south of Eindhoven. Channel - English side 8/10ths to 10/10ths at 3,000 - 4,000 ft., lowering over base to 10/10ths 500 ft. to 2,000 ft. Sea clam.
