Ramrod 1200. 12 Spits IX LF (45 gallon tanks) with 165 squadron led by W/C Powell acted as close escort to 36 U.S. Bostons, bombing Frevent Railway Junction and embankment. Bombers late at R/V. In French coast well E. of Furnes at 12,000 ft. Fighters 14,000 ft. Bombers seemed uncertain of position of target and went to Coutrai-Lille-Arras making three wide circuits over target area which bombed with fair results. From Arras, bombers were given vector of 060°. Fighter escort were vectored on 315° from Tournai which brought them back to base. Moderate heavy flak from Hesdin fairly accurate for bombers. Weather patchy stratus at 2000 ft. Visibility good. Time up 09.30 - Down 11.25 Over target 10.25. 1 a/c returned early R/T u/s.
