Details

Twelve A/C were briefed to bomb the village CASTELRAIMONDO AND MATELICA (in inland valley SW of ANCONA) in order to assist PARTISAN activity. Six A/C attacked each target the 1st two A/C on each acting as Pathfinders by dropping flares.

CASTELRAIMONDO was very well illuminated and it is claimed that all, or at least five sticks of 4 x 300 lb bombs fell in the immediate the railway and causing ... blue ... In the case of MATELICA the flares appear to have dropped WESTWARD of the village which was consequently not identified and ... bombs fell west of the target.

A convoy on the East coast road was straffed by many crews. Weather was good but although the valley itself was clear, there was 4-6/10 cloud at 6-7000' over the hills surrounding the valley.
